The mountainous regions of Laos make travel difficult. Many villages are isolated, with limited access to roads or transportation networks. Due to the absence of schools, education is minimal or nonexistent in these areas. Most villagers rely on farming, particularly rice and vegetables, for their livelihoods.
These communities are often cut off from basic services and infrastructure, such as electricity. The lack of electricity severely hampers daily life, as families must rely on traditional methods like candles or firewood for light, which are not only inefficient but also pose safety risks.
Without access to reliable lighting, many villagers have to halt activities when the sun sets. Solar lights would make a significant difference. They would also enhance safety by reducing the risks associated with open flames from candles or kerosene lamps, which can lead to fires or harmful indoor air pollution.
